One of the hardest things for new affiliate marketers to overcome is choosing their first niche. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the details of search volume, competing websites, backlink competition, and more.
Dominating a niche used to boil down to who could build the largest amount of related backlinks to their website. Search engine algorithms have changed drastically, and although links still play a role in search engine rankings, it really comes down to high quality content.
I wouldn’t recommend competing for keywords like “make money online” or “how to lose weight” right out of the gate, but if you have a passion for something and there are other competitors in that space – don’t get too caught up in the details. If you can provide more helpful, higher quality content and you consistently update your website, as long as you stick with it you will eventually take the throne.
Quality + Content + Endurance = A successful affiliate marketing business.

Ian I just watched your video on being the king and queen of your niche. I choose the passion route then the money at this point because I want to help others as I was.
thanks.
That’s an awesome mentality to have in this industry, Reggie! Combined with consistency and hard work you have the makings of a great affiliate marketer, just stick with it!
Hello Ian. I have a quick question about keywords. Are keywords something that should be put directly into the content of a website or is it more something that you put into the “database” of the website like YouTube tags or both?
Hey Andrew – you definitely want to put them in both. Don’t overdo it, but you want the keywords you’re trying to rank for as present in your content as possible without sounding unnatural or like you’re keyword stuffing.
Hey Ian! I believe content is King and will always be king because you have to provide people with what they are looking for, which is information. In the earlier days of affiliate marketing I hated the race for tons of backlinks.
I’m glad that the algorithm has changed because a lot of people are weak when it comes to content creation. This will help to weed out those sites that can’t produce quality content. Making it easier for those who take the time to build great content for their sites to rank.
Hey Michelle! I agree completely. Google said for years, “Don’t focus on backlinks, just create high quality content and we’ll take care of the rest.” Unfortunately, that wasn’t true for many years and backlinks definitely controlled rankings. We’ve moved into an era in internet search where that’s no longer the case, so now it’s truer than ever – if you focus on high quality content and rough it out for a few weeks or months, eventually anyone can break through. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and feel free to let me know if I can help you with anything else down the road!
Hi Ian,
It’s me again. I just want to thank you for giving your followers the right direction in IM. Anyway, I have come across an IM ‘guru’ named Anik Singh (I hope I got his surname right) of INBOX BLUEPRINT, introduced by Mark Ling of Affilorama. Anik’s business is like a ‘copy & paste’ style where you purchase his software and promote whatever his software is through emailing people.
Thanks,
Jenny
Unfortunately I’m not familiar with Inbox Blueprint, but anything being pitched as copy/paste is a REALLY bad sign. That just doesn’t work in internet marketing. In theory it does, which is why it’s such a good selling point, but in practice it’s completely impossible to set someone up for success with a copy/paste system. I recently wrote an article on this on a site I’m still working to build out/launch, which you can read here. It describes all of the red flags of internet marketing products that should be avoided if they claim any of these points on their sales page (and “copy/paste” is one of them). Check it out when you have some time.
Ironically enough, Anik Singal set me up for a review of his product before I even saw the asking price (787$ payments, 3 of them? I used to work 2 months for that kind of money and that would just make one payment), and that led me to your warning, and your argument convinced me more than his 8 hours of ‘live webinars’.
But I did get to see your WA review.
I believe it was actually 4 payments of $787, or $2997 if you paid all at once. Can you believe that?! Thanks for stopping by, Vlad! Let me know if I can help with anything else down the road.
Hi Ian, I found you by pure chance looking for gsniper 2 ! so glad I did, thank you so much for saving me a ton of money ! have just joined WA , and it looks very promising so far .
I was wondering have you heard of traffic brokers ? am on a 7 day trial with 5 days left and I am really undecided if to cancel. I don’t mind hard work, but am struggling as they’re seems to be a barrier on every step. Anyway i’d love your comments on it
thanks
Harriet
Hey Harriet, thanks for stopping by and commenting! Regarding Traffic Brokers, I would recommend you check out the comments from people on this page. I haven’t reviewed it personally but the model that Jeff Walker is promising on the sales page is farfetched, illegitimate, and “too good to be true” as many promises in this industry are. I would proceed with caution if I were you, or cancel the trial promptly. I hope that helps!
